Art Courses for 2011-2012 Rene Driggers 803-622-6215 rdriggers8@sc.rr.com Fees: $20/month per course Art History - Art 101 is a beginner course (grades k-12) that is based on basic sketching. Students will study artwork and major art pieces of an American artist and begin mastering the art of sketching what they see. Each class, students will practice this technique and will be given an assignment for homework to be brought in the following class period. High school students will receive grades and ½ credit hour upon completion of 75 hours of art, homework, field trip, and extra art time. Art Appreciation - Advanced art is a course given (grades 6-12) to students who are interested in using all art mediums including : oil painting, clay, water color, ink, jewelry making, etc. Students will study a world history artist such as Monet and a major piece of art. An art project related to the artist will be assigned. On completion of the course, high school students will be given grades and ½ high school credit. Art Photography - Art photography is a course that is based on digital photographs taken while on local field trips to places such as Irmo Park, the State House, Trinity Cathedral, etc. Students are required to bring in at least 2 (8 x 10) photos of each trip. The purpose of the photos is to capture art through photography. Students will experiment with black and white, sepia, videos, and portraits, etc. This class is offered to 9th-12th graders and will be given ½ high school credit upon completion. ART CLASSES FOR HOME SCHOOL STUDENTS Art classes for elementary-age students are now forming for the new school year. Classes will be held on Monday afternoons. First and second graders will meet from 1-2 pm ($10 per class); third – sixth graders will meet from 2:30-3:45 ($12 per class). There will be a one time $25 registration fee for materials and firing fees for clay units. The curriculum will pull from the national and state art standards, and will include art knowledge (art elements and principles), art studio (techniques and skills with tools and media), art history and world cultures, creativity (selection of art ideas and subject matter), connections between the visual arts and other disciplines, and decision-making about art (aesthetics). Classes will be taught by Jeannette Maybin (National Board Certified art teacher with 32 years of experience) on Wayne McCaw Road in Irmo. HISTORY South Carolina Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum For over a century, the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum's mission has been to collect and preserve the military history of this state. When you enter Columbia's oldest museum, you uncover the state's martial tradition from the Revolutionary War to the present War on Terror. The second Friday of each month is Homeschool Friday at the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military. Sessions start at 10:00AM and last approximately one hour. APPLIED LEADERSHIP ½ credit 75 hours Leadership or Bible Elective Cost: $225 plus an estimate of $65 for the backpacking trip COURSE DESCRIPTION: The student will explore, in principle and experience, the biblical foundations, contemporary expressions, and soft skills of effective leadership. This course will feature experiential phase training in character development, problem solving, group relational navigation, conflict/emergency management, non-verbal assessments, and coping with weakness, failure, and limitations. A weekend backpacking trip to Pisgah National Forest, NC will put all of the student’s learning to the test in a real life situation. ETHICS and LEADERSHIP ½ credit 75 hours Ethic or Leadership Elective Cost: $225 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to examine the moral responsibilities of leadership in a variety of contexts. Ethics is about right and wrong, in individuals and in our relationships. In this course, we will learn about leadership by studying ethics. The course rests on the assumption that leadership is a subset of ethics rather than ethics being a subset of leadership studies. We will examine the ethics of what leaders are, what they do, and how they do it. WORLDVIEWS ½ credit 75 hours History or Philosophy Elective Cost: $225 plus Book: “The Battle for the Truth” by David A. Noebel COURSE DESCRIPTION: “The term worldview refers to any ideology, philosophy, theology, movement, or religion that provides an overarching approach to understanding God, the world, and man’s relations to God and the world.” (pg. 2). In this course the student will examine, compare and contrast the four major worldviews (Secular Humanism, Marxism/Leninism, Cosmic Humanism, and Biblical Christianity). Emphasis will be placed on ten major areas that that affect most ever area of our life. (Theology, Philosophy, Ethics, Biology, Psychology, Sociology, Law, Politics, Economics, and History.) Student will need their own copy of the text book and will have to keep up with the weekly reading schedule, handed out the first day of class. ANCIENT HISTORY ½ credit 75 hrs. History Elective Cost: $225 plus cost of study guide COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course covers the entire Bible. It deals with the relationships and content of each book set in its historical perspective. The purpose of this course is to study these relationships, and in particular the progress and unity of what God is doing and saying through Ancient History. Therefore this course will explore the hand of God from creation to about 100AD. This will touch on the major civilizations that interacted with the biblical text up to the early Roman Empire. IEW Writing Classes This course will be taught at Manuela Brower’s home in Irmo September 7, 2010 till the end of April 2011. Tuesdays: Level 1 - from 1:00 to 2:15 PM Level 2 - from 2:30 to 3:45 PM (preparation for writing portion of SAT included in Level 2) Wednesdays: Level 3 - from 9:30 to 10:45 AM These three levels build upon each other and are typically taken in this sequence: Level 1 - 6th, 7th grade Level 2 – 8th, 9th grade Level 3 -10th, 11th, 12th grade Public speaking skills are taught and practiced at levels 1 and 3. Cost: $35 per month (for 8 months). (2 siblings= $65). One time fee of $25 for the workbook (to be paid at the first class). One time enrollment fee of $25 to ensure a place in the class. Tutoring Multiple Subjects I have taught elementary school the past 4 years, and the Lord worked out the circumstances so that I could stay home with our young child instead of returning to teaching! I have worked with all grade levels K-5 and I would love to tutor any or all subjects within those grade levels. My specialty is working with students struggling with reading and writing, but I would love to teach your child any of the subjects. I charge 20.00 or 25.00 per hour depending on the location that the tutoring would take place. We also have a small homeschooled group of 2nd graders that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-12 at Columbia Crossroads Church. SOAR began in 1999 with approximately 175 children playing soccer. There have been many blessings to share since our inception, and we are certainly thankful for the foundation laid. Due to the fruits of many, we currently have over 1,200 children and adults playing soccer, baseball/softball, flag football, basketball, lacrosse and cheerleading. SOAR also offers a variety of arts and recreational programs, as well as summer camps.
